On 31.12.2021, we successfully completed the three-year project ”Connecting Simulations, Machines and Tools to Optimise the Polymer Manufacturing Process” (CoSiMa). The project was implemented under the programe Promoting the implementation of research and development projects (TRL 3-6), within the Operational Programme for the Implementation of the European Cohesion Policy 2014-2020, and is classified under S4: INDUSTRY 4.0, Factories of the future. In addition to the consortium partners’ own shares, the operation is co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport.
Six consortium partners were involved:
- Razvojni center orodjarstva Slovenije TECOS (lead partner),
- Kolektor Orodjarna (Postojna) d.o.o.,
- Gorenje Orodjarna d.o.o.,
- Fakulteta za tehnologijo polimerov,
- L-TEK Elektronika in
- TEHNOPLAST, Anton Krebelj s.p.
The project contributed to the further development of automation and digitisation of the injection moulding process in line with Industry 4.0 guidelines. We have developed a link between simulations of the injection moulding process, which simulate the flow of the polymer melt inside the tool, and the polymer injection moulding machine, which controls the entire process.
The industrial research and experimental development carried out represents an important contribution to the real-time adaption and response of the injection moulding process to process and environmental disturbance, with improved control over current process parameters. Future research and development will focus on even better mathematical models for more accurate prediction of process conditions during injection moulding of the mould nest.
